As much as I know about society, Sociology is the "science of society" which means that the actions, behavioral patterns, trends and revolutions are studied at not only the macro but also the micro level. Though sociology is assumed to be founded by philosophers like socrates and then later on enriched by modern thinkers like Marx, Durkheim and Webber. Then the post-modern thinkers like Talcott Parsons and Wilbert E Mooore almost made it an area of specialization, hence, I may sound too naive as a sociologist to comments on the prophets as in the Indian case study. But the beauty and vastness of sociology still drives me to carry forward my views about the role and contribution of prophets in the incredible reformation of society.
It is a matter of great surprise for me that sociology hasn't even talked about the great seers/ prophets/ Astrologers like Nostradamus who not only dictated the collective-conscious of his contemporary people but the fear and mystery of his prophecies continues to haunt the present day intellectuals i.e. socially and politically awakened section of people. It is believed that Nostradamus predicted about the rise of Hitler, assassination of Kennedy and even the first and second world war in the sixteenth century but his prophecy about the guiding leader of Asian origin in the 21st century still continues to resonate across the south-east Asian region. Majority of the inhabitants of this area, being affiliated to a particular religion try to correlate the mythical figure of that "chosen one" to the prophets of their respective religions.
Hence the validity of the Marx's statement as the religion being "the opium of the masses" makes perfect sense in order to avoid any catastrophe in the name of religion causing the loss of innumerable human lives. I'm not getting paranoid, I'm only being practical. But how ??
As this science of society goes to the extent of studying the behavioral patterns to the individual level, it's not imperative to state here that every individual action could be considered as a social action if it has some socio-political impact, this argument makes all the more sense with the emergence of modern technology i.e. internet, social media etc. Hence, monitoring every single individual for making the right or wrong social action is almost impossible, so this is where the role of the wisdom provided by prophets and seers comes into play, As the wisdom imparted centuries ago becomes a part of our conscious as not only a cultural tradition but also out of an inquisitive thirst for learning as an inherent feature of the human nature.
The famous saying that "The power of one is the power to do something or Anything !!" could make all the more sense and the traditional notion of prophets do nothing else than making our belief system and convictions more firm about the saying. Hence, I strongly recommend that sociology needs to be more open in its expression about the prophets/ messiahs of various religions.
